Introducing Backlash: A Puzzle Game Built From Gears

Some puzzle games hand you a picture and ask you to solve it. Backlash hands you a machine and asks you to build it.

What Backlash Is

Backlash is our new gear-puzzle game, currently making its way through App Store review. At its core, it's about assembling working mechanical systems — placing engines, gears, shafts, and chains until everything clicks into motion together.

Gear size isn't just visual flavor — it reflects the metal each piece is made from, ranging from lighter alloys up to heavy-duty steel. Bigger, heavier gears behave differently than smaller, lighter ones, and part of the puzzle is understanding how each piece needs to interact with the ones around it.

Backlash includes three game modes, giving you different ways to engage with the core mechanic:

A structured puzzle mode for working through carefully designed challenges

Additional modes for different styles of play

An endless puzzle generator, for anyone who just wants to keep tinkering without ever running out of new machines to build

Whether you want a focused challenge or an open-ended sandbox to lose an afternoon in, Backlash has a mode built for it.

Why We Built It

There's a specific kind of satisfaction in watching something mechanical work — gears turning in sync, a chain pulling taut, an engine finally driving the whole system. We wanted to build a puzzle game around that feeling: the moment everything you've placed piece by piece finally comes together and moves.

Like everything from illManajed Games, Backlash is designed to be sensory-friendly from the ground up — no overwhelming effects, no unnecessary pressure, just the steady, satisfying logic of assembling a machine that works.
